Snow days can be trouble for your fitness regimen. Here are a few ways to get moving when it’s too dangerous to hit the streets.

Shovel

This activity is pretty hard to avoid on snow days, so you minus well embrace it. Shoveling is a great activity for burning calories and passing the time when you’re home bound. Be sure to lift with your legs to protect your back. Dress warmly and take plenty of breaks. When you’re tired your form will get sloppy and that’s when you’re likely to get hurt.

Take on a home project.

Everyone has some kind of home task they’ve been meaning to get to. It may be going through your closet, organizing your room or redecorating of some sort. Use this time to cross a project off of your to do list. Throw on some of your favorite music and get to work. At the end of the day you’ll have a clean and organized room and you’ll feel good about having stayed active through out the day.

Playtime

Are you snowed in with company? Take advantage of it. Play some games with your children, dog or spouse. You could venture outside for a snowball fight or stay in and play an active game like freeze dance or twister. The more time you spend on your feet the better off you will be today. Have some fun with it and be creative.

Use Commercial Breaks

Chances are you’re sucked into a marathon of your favorite television show for most of the day. Get moving during the commercials. Instead of heading to the kitchen for a snack get up and do 20 jumping jacks for each commercial break. Make a game out of it, for every time that you see a commercial for a certain product do a specific exercise like sit ups. At the end of your tv marathon you’ll have done more work than you usually do in an hour at the gym.

Do An In-Home Work Out

Try a body weight work-out to help you get moving. There are tons of on-demand work-outs that range from beginners to advanced. Check out my youtube channel. There are five different work-outs on there, and only one of which requires equipment. Carve some time out to get your heart pumping, you will be glad you did.

Try one, two or all five of these tips to have a successful snow day. You will sleep better tonight if you get moving instead of laying around all day!
